Tanzania

Tanzania in East Africa is world famous for its spectacular wildlife safaris, with elephant, lion, giraffe and zebra roaming freely across huge areas of the country. From the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro to the sun-drenched beaches of Zanzibar, colourful indigenous cultures still thrive here as they have done for centuries.

Gap Medics students trekking in Ruaha National Park We are based in Iringa, a wonderfully friendly town set in the stunning landscape of the southern highlands. It’s just a couple of hours from Tanzania’s largest National Park, Ruaha, which means you can finish work on Friday and be spotting big game in a safari camp before sunset! Closer to the house there are opportunities for horse riding or helping at a local orphanage to add some volunteer experience to your time in Africa.

Being one of the safest regions in Tanzania, yet well off the beaten track, Iringa is great for first-time visitors to Africa who want to be more than just casual tourists. The hospitals here are fantastic places to gain work experience in tropical medicine, as well as general surgery, paediatrics and maternity healthcare. Traditional tribal practices and attitudes to medical care add very interesting cultural and ethical dimensions to the learning experience – the kind of things that can really make a personal statement or medical school interview stand out.
