Orphanage Volunteer Work

To supplement to your healthcare placement, you can also choose to do some orphanage volunteer work during your time with us in Tanzania.

Orphanage volunteer work is a great addition to your placement as it enables you to develop the kind of skills that every healthcare professional needs and that medical school admissions staff are looking for.

Helping out at a local orphanage

Your hospital placement in Tanzania will provide you with experience of shadowing healthcare professionals in a hospital setting and combining this with volunteer work in a local orphanage in Iringa will give you an all round experience. It can help you gain all the skills of commitment, personal integrity, concern for others and the ability to communicate with others that med schools look for in their applicants.

Academically, you will learn a lot from your student mentors in the hospital. Some orphanage volunteer work will then enable you to become the mentor, and to help by volunteering where its most needed.

Our orphanage volunteers help care for orphans and abandoned children in a 32-bed orphanage a short distance from Iringa town. Volunteers can help by playing with the children, helping to cook them lunch, providing exercise and by teaching them English amongst many other things.

During your time volunteering in the orphanage you’ll still be staying in the Gap Medics house with the same full support from our staff team that you get for your hospital placement. Just choose the number of weeks you want to spend in the orphanage on our application form.
