India

An exotic fusion of ancient cultures and colourful temples, where camels wander the streets and pilgrims ride on train rooftops through sacred cities… India deserves its reputation as one of the world’s most exciting travel destinations.

Working in an Indian hospital, it’s incredible to see just what dedicated doctors and nurses can achieve with very limited resources. Delivering healthcare to the country’s 1.2 billion people is an immense task that challenges even the most experienced professionals, and being part of it is an amazing experience. Having a first-hand insight into the daily ethical and clinical dilemmas is precisely the kind of experience that can make your performance at a medical school interview stand out, ultimately helping you to become a more rounded professional.

Our India programme is located in the city of Jodhpur, in the northern state of Rajasthan; a location that offers students a fantastic experience both inside and outside of the hospital. We work with five large multispecialty as well as specialised healthcare facilities within Jodhpur, all within a short distance of the Gap Medics house. As with all our programmes, we operate a system that is as beneficial to the host organisation as it is to our students.

Outside of the hospital, it’s easy to see why we have chosen the city as our base in India: from the maze of bazaar-like streets in the old town to the majesty of the ancient Mehrangarh Fort which dominates the skyline, Jodhpur is an amazing place to explore and is a long-standing tourist destination. The city is surrounded by the perfect terrain for camel safaris and desert adventures, with enchanting cities such as Udaipur and Jaipur within easy weekend travelling distance.

India and our base in the enchanting northern province of Rajasthan is an experience that will last long in the memory, and it’s also a wonderfully affordable country, with 2-week placements under £1,000 including accommodation and food, and weekend adventures that definitely won’t break the bank.
